The eye contact thing seems like a subtle last resort for control - it’s intimidation. Like you mentioned, it was uncomfortable enough for people to look away and your researcher to even verbalize ‘what?’ By looking at everyone in the court in their eyes and taking the time to do so, he’s nonverbally acknowledging “I see you’’…as almost a deliberate way of taking in the moment to remember each face while ensuring each person is aware of it - and it doesn’t seem like his intent is friendly.
