lUTEOLIN, FOUND IN VEGETABLES, A NATURAL SOLUTION FOR GREYING HAIR
Researchers from Nagoya University in Japan have identified luteolin, an antioxidant found in vegetables such as celery, broccoli and carrots, as a potential anti-greying agent. Their study tested three antioxidants — luteolin, hesperidin and diosmetin — on mice bred to go grey like humans. Only luteolin significantly prevented greying, preserving black fur regardless of whether it was administered externally or internally.
Luteolin’s effect is linked to its role in preserving endothelins, proteins essential for cellular communication. By maintaining endothelin expression and receptor activity, luteolin supports melanocyte function, preventing the loss of pigmentation.
Interestingly, it does not affect hair-growth cycles, suggesting its primary action is on pigmentation rather than hair regrowth. Luteolin, already available in supplement form for both topical and oral use, shows promise for further development as an anti-greying treatment.
